Hate: As Seen on TV

TV

Abstract

Understanding the content of media—and particularly television news—is necessary if we want to fully comprehend the life cycle of hate in our society. With its unmatched 40-year collection of local, national, and international television news, UCLA’s NewsScape Archive provides unique resources and opportunities to study the ways in which hate has been covered, described, invoked, and even fostered through the words and images transmitted through the news. This proposal describes how a seed grant from the Initiative to Study Hate can help unlock the immense potential of the NewsScape Archive to better understand the role of mass media and hate in modern America…and beyond.
